...A Different Way to Look at Music...

Often Asked Questions...

Some questions you may have thought about asking...

Question:

I have not played an instrument before... but have always wanted to - can you help?

Answer:

Absolutely! - I will patiently guide you in your first steps on your chosen instrument and make learning to play it an extremely enjoyable experience!

Question:

I feel nervous about taking lessons - is this a problem?

Answer:

All lessons are taken one-to-one in a relaxed, friendly environment, where the experience of learning an instrument is extremely enjoyable - I will make you feel totally at home!

Question:

I cannot read music - will I be able to learn my chosen instrument successfully...?

Answer:

I will guide you through all the techniques to enable you to learn to read music correctly, if so desired, making it a rewarding and enjoyable way to achieve fluency in a new language - the language of music. However, the initial stages of learning certain instruments do not necessarily require any music reading whatsoever...

It is also very important to be aware that music reading is only one aspect of playing any instrument successfully, in fact, I ALWAYS place high importance on the ability to 'open up' your own hearing and your personal awareness of sound, both of which are crucial factors in enabling ANY musician at ANY level of development to interact successfully within ALL genres in the 'real' musical world...!!!

Question:

I feel I am too old to start learning an instrument - is this a true statement...?

Answer:

Absolutely not! You can start playing any time in life - as long as you have the determination, there are no barriers to you learning to play your chosen instrument!

Question:

I do not have my own instrument... does this stop me taking lessons?

Answer:

Absolutely not! I have an instrument you can use during your lessons and I can also guide you on the best way to obtain your own instrument when you are ready. Please be aware, however, that not having an instrument to practice on at home does make progress slower, so it is always better to obtain your chosen instrument as soon as you are able.

Question:

Do I have to buy an instrument as soon as possible?

Answer:

Not at all! You can easily hire instruments from a professional specialist, with options to buy after a period of hire (commonly three to six months) - I will guide you in the best way to do this!

Question:

I do not have much time to practice between lessons... does this matter?

Answer:

You can put in as little or as much practice as you want, but you must remember that your progress on the instrument will be slower without some practice between lessons.

Question:

How quickly will I learn my instrument?

Answer:

That all depends on how much practice you do - you will only get out what you are prepared to put in!

Question:

I have started taking lessons, but I feel I would really like to try another instrument instead of the one I'm playing now. Can I do this...?

Answer:

Absolutely! Please ask me if you want to try another instrument, as the one you wanted to play originally may not actually be the 'right' one for you after all - you may also find that you enjoy playing the 'alternative' one much more!

Question:

I want to take Music Exams - can you help?

Answer:

Yes! I can thoroughly prepare you for any Exam and I can help you get as much as possible out of your studies, enabling you to feel as confident as possible on the day in question!

Question:

Do you teach Music Theory?

Answer:

Yes! - I can explain everything from the very basic 'nuts and bolts' of music, to extremely complex advanced theoretical concepts - all of which I do in a very easy to understand and 'user-friendly' way!

Question:

I have been playing my instrument for many years, can you still teach me something...?

Answer:

Absolutely! I have the ability to extract the best out of ANY player - I have tutored professional players and even other music teachers - you'll be extremely surprised at what I can do for your playing, whatever your current level...!!!

Question:

What styles of music do you teach...?

Answer:

It's probably easier to ask me which styles I don't teach...!!! - However, I believe that it's very important that you learn exactly what YOU want to learn, therefore ALL lessons are structured to YOUR exact tuition requirements and desires!

It is also ESSENTIAL to make sure that you are taught the RIGHT way from your very first lesson, therefore I always make sure that your technique and posture is absolutely correct, regardless of whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced musician... after all, you want to be able to play your favourite type of music as easily and as fluently as possible!
